I got my start in design by writing about it…a lot. And I still really enjoy writing about it, mainly on my Medium page. It’s my way of processing new (to me) things. Classes, conferences, conversations, and work experiences.
How I became a UX writer
While UX writing/content design is less than 10 years old, it has been around in some way or another for well over 30 years. Yet, it is still an anomaly for UX writing to appear in university coursework, or UX bootcamps that are not specifically for UX writing.
So, maybe it’s time we flip the narrative of the ‘non-traditional’ background and admit that maybe the non-traditional way into UX writing is, in fact, the traditional way.
UX Writing vs Copywriting
Users desire more than just pretty colors and nice pictures on their screen. They want more than just functionality and usability. Users want to be understood, and the only way to understand is by having a conversation.
The purpose of the entire research process is to understand what it is our users want- what problem they have, and how are we solving it.
